    On Character Assassination

I'm saddened by the fact that, after a month of a whirwind process improvement with some of the departments I work with in the office, I'll hear that some people are playing the most dangerous game in the corporate life ... character assassination.

    AW011369

I was once a victim of this ploy last year. Unfortunately, the assassin lost the battle. There were no proofs found vs. me. Plus, my work has always spoken alone without me doing lipservice. I've always believed that I do not need to brag about what I do and how I do them well. In the end, it's always the end result that will talk. I've learned this from all the leaders that came before me. Rocky, a dear friend and a very good boss and leader/mentor to me has played a major role in this. However, not everyone has the same beliefs in terms of leadership. There are but a few sectors who do believe that taking credit for their people's work defines what a leader should be. And if there are team member challenges, it's not their fault at all hence making stories up to cause downfall. Well, that is very wrong! At least as to what I've learned! And since I do not believe in all those, I became an easy-target. But justice did prevail and the assassin has been ... defeated.

This time around, I sniffed another sniper. The target? Me again. Damn! I'm just glad that my boss believes in me and she sees how I work so I have nothing to worry about. I'm just not happy with how other emerging supervisors view the world of leaders and how they operate. Some people just can't understand! Some people are just ... soooo mean and still has that, what we call, crab mentality ... and the best way to do it is ... you guessed it right, character assassination. Some people just know how to play it best. How? Here's something I could probably see in their blackbook:

    • Spread rumors about your target.
    • Make a big fuss out of every little thing your target does.
    • Create a clan of people who will generate the same level of hate that you have vs. target.
    • Take things personally vs. your target.
    • Make your target look bad on your comrades.
    • The more insults your target gets from your gossip clan, the better.
    • No "hi" and "hello" greetings with the target! This will ruin your reputation.
    • Celebrate every failure your target has and make it known to the world.
    • The more failures you recognize vs. your target, the easier the downfall will be.

Whooo! That's just a peek of wha'ts inside I guess. But every little step counts. And the more personal it gets, the worse this play will go. Tsk tsk! Unfortunately again, I should say, my previous direct bosses and leaders/mentors have been very good to me, that I've learned how to combat these situations. I have grown to surpass these challenges and every step of the way made me become more objective ... more mature. And these things are merely part of the path to success. Sad to say, the assassin now is playing a losing battle with him/her as the loser. In the work life I have, the higher you climb up the corporate ladder, the more crabs will pull you down to failure ... as they enjoy to see more losers underneath than triumphant people on top - well at least, one of the things I've learned. So to my assassin now, go ahead and shoot! I'm the best dodger, I bet you didn't know. Hah! I just wish these types of people will just learn their lesson. Ruining the reputation of someone else will not do them any justice at all. This will not make them successful in any way. And as how my other uber-cool boss (sad he's no longer here though), who's been an inspiration to me as well, would say in Tagalog, Hayaan mo sya. Mas maganda ka kasi sa kanya kaya ganyan sya! That's what Daddy Jack would say! Haha!
